  A past winner (for a debut performance) who's fans were much irked when their idol's "masterwork" (centering on a masquerade as a member of the opposite sex) was denied any major Oscar nominations.

Future Sci-Fi Icon, (and Oscar Winner) who first caught major attention my playing multiple characters (some of the opposite sex) in a dark comedy...

 Talent known for wild comedy turns, alternating with a few wobbly tearjerkers, and a very popular turn in drag, before going ultra dramatic and finally snagging an Oscar.

 Method artist who was both frighteningly good ( and just a little bit frightening) in a dress in a lightweight (but very intelligent) comedy.

 Double Winner who donned dresses for his big break (in tv) before earning great acclaim in both comedies and dramas...

Intense nominee who seemed"out of this world" in more ways than one while doing a very weird cameo in an odd supernatural romance (starring this talent's life partner at the time of filming).

Future double winner who began career as heart stopping child actor whose beauty was twice defiled by horrible haircuts....one of which was given in the film that made this talent a major name.

Tom Hanks is the answer to the fifth question. Jodie Foster the answer to the last question, perhaps?

Hanks is the answer to #5....but the star I am aiming for in the last question is from a generation before Foster...and the "bad haircut " movies i am referring to are from 1944 (in the first she was an unbilled supporting player making only her third film appearance...in the second, where she masqueraded briefly as a boy, she became a star).

Hoffman is a good guess, but the artist I am thinking of was ignored by the academy in 1983...a year after "Tootsie". The slight was more viscious because this person directed the film in which they masqueraded as a member of the opposite sex...and a lot of critics joined the howling of the stars very loyal fans.

Yes April, Barbra Streisand was denied an Actress or Director Nomination for "Yentl" (despite deglaming herself to play a nebbishy boy...) Going back to full glam didn't help later on when she was again overlooked for "The Prince Of Tides"

Nope...wrong kind of intense (and wrong gender...I think) this person struck serious sparks Off Travolta and Gere early in her career...but had no chemistry with Timmothy Hutton (to whom she was married) when she played a MALE angel in a film co-starring Kelly Lynch

Bravo April! Robin Williams in hysterical drag in "Doubtfire" and Debra Winger unforgettably channelling Mickey rooney as a male Angel in the bizarre "Made in Heaven"....which was NOT made in heaven. Her character's name was Emmett Humbird.

Of course, "Made in Heaven". I saw it back in '87. Didn't last long in theaters. Perhaps that's why I wasn't thinking of it. However, had I seen your hints about Debra Winger, I would have remembered it instantly

The last two unsolved questions are both British talents who made it very big in Hollywood backed movies....

The actor in question # 2 was actually quite shocked and more than a bit bemused to find himself a fanboy idol at an advanced age.

The talent in the last question seemed to be destined to play ravishing beauties (from childhood on) , but got two oscars as she progressed through sexpot and harridan roles.
