A hip-hop legend has passed away, as Guru, pioneering member of Gang Starr, has died of cancer at the age of 43. A CBS news report claims that the rapper, whose real name is Keith Elam, passed away after a "long fight" with the disease.
Guru most recently was in the news in March, when he reportedly suffered cardiac arrest. He recovered from that incident after surgery.
Guru was a rap pioneer in a group that managed to bridge several generations and styles of rap. With a smooth vocal style and ability to tell a story - a la Slick Rick - Guru and partner DJ Premier produced some memorable records in the hip hop industry.
The group got its start in Boston many years ago before moving to New York City to find more success.
The pair releases six albums between 1989 and 2003, according to the CBSnews.com report.
