he is just starting his career......i've googled some of the old venues he played in - he paid his dues. so - if he makes only $1mill such a disappointment?

i'm 48 yrs old.....have the biggest crush on him (never had one on a celeb before) and never defended someone......but this guy.....just feel as though i need too.

The main reason that the show is increasingly unpopular because the end results of at least the last two seasons did not reflect the opinion of the majority of the viewers (Kris Allen over Adam Lambert; Lee over Crystal). Serious voters and music lovers voted only once. Doubtly they voted 2 hrs long/multiple hundred times. They might be majority in term of ‘pure’ count, but they could be minority in term of votes. How could we know for sure that Lee had more viewers for him than for Crystal?
American Idol is a singing contest. Let’s listen to what the music experts have analyzed their performances:
“If the finals were the deciding factor, Crystal won it in a walk. If all the season's performances were the basis for decision, Crystal easily won there, too. She seized the moment and outsang Lee at every turn.
It was a sad night for those who cling to the quaint notion that American Idol is a singing contest. Based on Tuesday night's performances, and those of the entire season, Crystal won that contest by a mile. She would have made a refreshing kind of champion. Instead, a pale orthodoxy triumphed.”

With ONE CALL = ONE VOTE, Crystal would have won in a LANDSLIDE: 66% vs 34% for Lee!
American Idol Voting System is absolutely flawed. Understandably American Idol rating goes down drastically. The last two seasons had strong evidence that serious viewers and talented artists won’t want to waste their time to participate or even to watch the show!

I disagree - I don't think Crystal was robbed of winning Idol. She can sing but so can Lee. It all comes down to what a person wants to hear on their stereo or ipod and it wasn't Crystal for me nor for others. I have 10 of Lee's songs on my ipod and not one of Crystal's. Why? Because I love his voice. Yes Lee got multiple votes but don't kid yourself, so did Crystal. Why not compare the actual number of singles sold by these two in their first week - both being cover songs. Lee sold close to 100,000 copies of his single whereas Crystal sold roughly 60,000 copies - 40% less! This speaks volumes! I don't know of any person out there who would buy multiple copies of a 'single' so this tells me that the person most of America wanted to win, won. So stop comparing Lee to past Idol winners - he found his own fanbase. And if you want to compare, then it's time to be fair - Crystal is another Janis Joplin or Melissa Etheridge and that music had it's time and place 30 years ago. And finally, I'm 42 years old, watched the show every week and didn't vote once because regardless of where Lee placed, his music was the only music I was going to buy!

The American Idol voting system is misused and taken advantage by certain groups, such as VoteForTheWorst.com. Their objective is to ridicule and undermine American Idol. This awsome platform for young talented musicians to be discovered has taken its toll to become 'irrelevant' slowly but surely:

Some people and/or voters are not able to distinguish between singing competition and selling record albums. Contestants in American Idol are rated based on their performances, vocal range/quality and ability to redefine the music arrangements of the given songs or songs of their choice to fit their identity as artists in a given period of time. The competition is over. The consensus of many music critics: Crystal was the winner.
Selling record albums depends upon artists’ genre/song choices, promotional activities, surely studio performances as well. American Idols release their albums usually in November. The sales of the release of their ‘winner’s songs’ immediately after the finale are not necessarily the gauge of success. Lee’s & Crystal’s success in that regard remains to be seen in November.

Early returns for Adam Lambert’s “For Your Entertainment” from billboard.com show the album will sell about 225,000 this week. Kris Allen last week sold 80,000, the lowest ever for an “Idol” winner.

I get it - you like Crystal. Good for you. I don't! And the same can be said of countless others. As for all the so-called music critics you like to quote - I'm also not a parrot and don't need someone else to tell me who I should like. I can make that decision all by myself! If we all listened to a handfull of 'critics' well then we might as well close the doors to all the variety we have and line up like cattle waiting to be directed. Listen, you have your favorite and that's fine - but I also can do an internet search and come up with 'critics' who all felt Lee should have won. So the point you are trying to make here is mute. The end result is that Crystal sold 40% less of her single which is the only 'true' fact to be posted. 40% less means 40% less popularity - done. One night of performances does not automatically make you the winner - it's a process. Again, it's about who you like overall.

Here's a little tidbit for you.....what is a 'critic'? Just a person with an opinion. People are the true critics and the only ones that matter and come November there is no doubt in my mind that the person with the most relevant sound and music will prevail. Again, for me that person is Lee! And for you, it's Crystal - so enjoy.
