'The Avengers' movie for 2012 is seeing quite the cast of characters on its list. Ed Norton's out. Mark Ruffalo could be in. Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his famous 'Iron Man' role as will two of his co-stars. There will be two other superheros on the team who have their own feature films in 2011. 'The Avengers' is shaping up to be one of the ultimate superhero films of all time, and could set very high standards for 2012 and beyond in the super crime-fighting universe.
The Avengers are a formation of Superheroes similar to X-Men, although they aren't necessarily mutants. They are almost like the Marvel version of DC Comics' Justice League which united Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash and others together to fight crime. COmic books are also famous for pitting heroes against one another, although they usually wind up working together again. There have been rumors that Hulk could end up being the villain in the first "Avengers" film rather than part of the team.
Over the years in the comic book, members came and went. Some of those who were part of the Avengers team at one time or another were Spiderman, Wolverine, Hawkeye, Ant Man, Wonder Man and Human Torch. Actor Chris Evans could get confused with two roles!
Marvel will focus on several superheros for its first film, most of whom we will have met by the Summer of 2012. So far here's who appears to be in 'The Avengers' characters list.
Robert Downey Jr. - Iron Man
Scarlett Johansson - Black Widow
Chris Evans - Captain America
Chris Hemsworth - Thor
Mark Ruffalo - Incredible Hulk
Samuel L. Jackson - Nick Fury
Jeremy Renner - Hawkeye
Three of the characters above have been featured in "Iron Man 2", while Hulk has been in 2 previous Marvel movies. Two of the Avengers will get their own films in 2011. Chris Evans will get his own feature movie for "Captain America: The Firt Avenger" on July 22, 2011, while Chris Hemsworth as "Thor" has a scheduled release date of May 6, 2011.
The next few years could be epic for fans of Superheroes in general, as there will be multiple movies from both DC and Marvel including those mentioned above a third 'Batman' film from Christopher Nolan, 'The Green Hornet' and 'The Green Lantern'. Rumors of a 'Justice League' film are also circulating which could bring on a DC versus Marvel battle.
'The Avengers' movie in 2012 could really set the bar high for superhero films with a big budget, impressive ensemble cast and a great plot. Or it could be an epic fail. Time will tell if 'The Avengers' helps Marvel soar to new heights in super crime-fighting films.
Do you have a favorite comic book or superhero? Do you favor Marvel or DC Universe? Think there's a certain hero that should get its own movie?
