In a taped appearance on The View, President Obama took some initially difficult questions (about the Sherrod scandal, about the gulf oil spill and the economy, of course) and, in a professional yet affable way, he managed to get through them without too much controversy. As the interview progressed, the entire group loosened up and so did the conversation. Among the additional issues discussed were such intense topics as Chelsea Clinton's wedding (which he says he was not invited to). He said his feelings were not hurt and he professed to the View ladies that he probably wouldn't be inviting outsiders to his daughters' weddings, either, when it came time for those special family events. He also talked about how, at the end of each day, he and the first Lady and Sasha and Malia do The Rose and the Thorn, discussing the best and worst part of each of their days with each other. Asked about his answers, he said the Rose of the last few months was the family's recent getaway to Maine and the Thorn, "well, where do I start?" he quipped.
This appearance marks the first time a sitting President has been a guest on a morning talk show. In fact, it was so important an event that Barbara Walters, recovering from heart surgery, made her first appearance back on the show since she's been sick. Clearly, this historic event was meant to draw a big crowd and the ratings will probably show a nice spike for the ABC talk show when they are released.
The President did contradict himself once . . . or did he? Having mocked Snooki from Jersey Shore in his speech at the Press Corps dinner some time ago, you would have thought Obama would have remembered who she was. However, on this show, he denied knowing who she was. Is this a new scandal waiting to erupt? Or is this dis just a means of the President trying to be mostly presidential in the midst of some silly pop culture questions? How do you think he came across??
