Brenda Barrett is back, and GH has her. Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo has finally returned to daytime where she belongs. It seems like longer than eight years have passed since Brenda headed to Europe leaving Jax and Sonny to fend for themselves. There has been speculation of Marcil's return every time one of her projects tanked, such as ABC's "Las Vegas" and her short run in "90210", but this time it's for real.
It is so real that ABC devoted the entire afternoon last Tuesday to a Brenda marathon, preempting both "One Life to Live" and "All My Children" to air all three of Brenda's marriage(or not) episodes. You can still catch them at ABC.com, if you want to catch up.
It is hard to believe that 18 years have passed since Marcil first appeared on General Hospital as the snotty, trouble making brat who wanted nothing more than to break up Jagger(Antonio Sabato Jr.) and Karen (Jennifer Leigh Hammon), which she did, opening a whole new can of worms, and leading to the inevitable meeting with bad boy Sonny Corinthos. History followed.
Bringing Brenda back is sure to be a rating coup for General Hospital, which, like all other soaps has been floundering in the ratings in recent years. When "As the World Turns" ends its historic 54 year run in September, GH will be the longest running soap still on TV. The return of Brenda hopefully will breathe some fresh life into the sagging soap, as there had always been one constant on GH, if Brenda is in a scene, something good is going to happen.
The storyline, which began on Wednesday, has Brenda fending off yet another marriage proposal, a failed attack and of course, high fashion. What will bring her back to PC? That is yet to be seen, but it is rumored that she will have one big whopping secret and will somehow be connected to Franco(James Franco), Port Charles' current psycho. It would be futile to speculate on the secret, but know it will have lingering repercussions for Brenda's men, Sonny, Jax and Jason. The only thing we know is, she has an aversion to diamonds.
Vanessa Marcil has stated in interviews that she is thrilled to return to her roots, and her one big hope is to have a storyline with Luke(Tony Geary). That would be wonderful. Tony Geary doesn't get nearly enough airtime, and his talent is wasted much of the time. Giving the man a hot story with Brenda could send ratings through the roof, which is what they aim for, right?
You can catch up on the two episodes Brenda has appeared in by going to ABC.com, and tune in Monday through Friday at 3:00 for General Hospital. It's going to get hot, and I don't mean the weather.
