True Blood is no stranger to raised eyebrows. The hit HBO series has been shaking things up since its premiere three seasons ago in September 2008, having debuted as an adult answer to the teenaged Twilight series. Though the series has gotten progressively more lienient with images of violence and sexuality, the cast is now bringing these same images to the new issue of Rolling Stone, in a cover story entitled, "The Joy of Vampire Sex."
If the title of the article wasn't enough to turn your head, perhaps the cover photo will be. It features the three stars of the series, Anna Paquin (who portrays Sookie Stackhouse), Alexander Skarsgard (who plays Eric Northman), and Stephen Moyer (Bill Compton), naked and covered in blood. Though most of the actors are covered, it's definitely a highly sexual cover, sure to brew a bit of controversy from the conservative set.
In talking about the blatently sexual themes in the True Blood series, series creator Alan Ball had this to say:
"To me, vampires are sex," he said. "I don't get a vampire story about abstinence. I'm 53. I don't care about high school students. I find them irritating and uninformed."
Do you think the cover is too controversial? Whereas True Blood is on a premium network which obviously allows far more mature images and themes, do you think that the visibility of Rolling Stone should have made them think twice about the cover image? Or do you think they're well within the range of propriety?
