Dick Clark's Rockin New Year's Eve 2011: Missing the Point?

Dick Clark's Rockin New Year's Eve 2011 celebration in Times Square is the largest party on earth when it comes to ushering in another calendar year.  But are we as a nation going too far in celebrating a milestone by partying like its 1999?  Or should we consider the real reason why we should be celebrating, much that has to do with compassion, humility, and rising more as a nation?  Perhaps, Mr. Clark is missing the point.

 

Scores of people from around the world look forward to this exhilarating show in which stars are put high on another pedestal.  One must wonder if the party is just for the top names in the business, while the working class minions like the majority of the country's workforce can only gawk at the bling and royalty.

While there are mobs of people who brave the elements to get a glimpse of Fergie, Ne-Yo, Train, Drake, Kesha, Avril Lavigne, and others, a growing number of people are just intent on ringing in the New Year without the party favors, bling, and stretch limos.

However, we have stood in wait for 39 years for another tricked-out event teaming with Top-40 artists of the world belting out platinum tunes.  All the while, a baby goes hungry, North Korea is threatening a holocaust of epic proportions against its South Korea rival, and gas prices continue to rise.

Is Dick Clark's Rockin New Year's Eve 2011 venue wearing out its welcome as the country tries to seek change?

As strange as it seems, our time and resources seem to go towards things that compliment our thirst for leisure and excitement, but ignore our fundamental duties to help our fellowman.
