What in the world is going on? Matt Lauer is reportedly leaving The Today Show after his 13-year run. The news comes just days after rumors of Meredith Vieira's departure surfaced.
A source tells Entertainment Tonight that Lauer is planning to resign when his contract expires at the end of 2012. So he still has well over a year left on the popular NBC morning show, but will he even last that long? If NBC finds a suitable replacement for him, it's possible that he could be gone soon--especially if Meredith Vieira leaves. Chances are good that the producers want to find two anchors who have great on-air chemistry, which could mean an early departure for Lauer. Unless of course these are all just rumors...
The Today Show released the following statement, "There seems to be an awful lot of speculation around news anchors these days, and it's not our practice to comment on any of it. Matt Lauer has a long term contract with NBC News and 'Today.'"
Lauer has been a staple in many viewers' lives, but it's not surprising that he's leaving. He's had a long run and probably wants to do something else with his life.
