Horror movies are certainly popular - and so are the films that spoof them. The Scary Movie franchise has already put out four movies, and there will be another one out soon. The upcoming fifth one has gotten a release date for next year.
Scary Movie 5 coming in 2012
It has been announced by the Weinstein Company that the next installment in the franchise will be in theaters on April 20, 2012. By the time it hits theaters, it will have been six years since Scary Movie 4, which spoofed movies such as Final Destination, Saw, Shaun of the Dead, and War of the Worlds, was in theaters in 2006. The franchise started back in 2000 with the first Scary Movie, which spoofed Scream with references to movies such as The Shining, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and The Blair Witch Project.
It has not yet been revealed if Anna Faris and Regina Hall will be back as Cindy and Brenda, though they were in the previous four and it wouldn't be surprising if they were. Though spoof films have not been doing too well over recent years, the Scary Movie franchise has not done too bad for itself, and it wouldn't be surprising to see moviegoers head to the theaters to see Scary Movie 5 since it has been years since the fourth one. However, that gap could also hurt the movie, as those who used to go to the theaters to see the films could have moved past the franchise. Still, plenty of horror movies have come out since, making for a long list of possible spoofs.
