You wouldn't expect a veteran actor like Gale Harold to appear in a supernatural teen drama like The CW's The Secret Circle. Harold has made numerous appearances in both television and film, but he is best known for his role as Brian Kinney on Showtime's Queer As Folk from 2000–2005. Harold has also appeared in episodes of ABC's Grey's Anatomy as well as the indie film Particles of Truth (2003).
Gale Harold's latest role is different from anything else he's ever done. According to a recent article in The Chicago Tribune, he's playing a warlock named Charles Meade in The Secret Circle. The series is based on the book series of the same name by author L.J. Smith. Smith's novels also inspired the CW series The Vampire Diaries. The Secret Circle is also the brainchild of creator Kevin Williamson and his partner in crime Julie Plec.
Since The Secret Circle is a supernatural drama, you might assume that Harold's character doesn't have the best of intentions. But in the article Harold says his character "Charles is not simply a villain." Charles's ultimate goal according to Harold is to protect his teenage daughter Diana (Shelley Hennig) but it seems like she'll be pretty good at protecting herself, since she also happens to be a witch.
When he was asked whether Charles Meade is good or evil, Harold said, "Whether or not it's pure evil will have to be decided by other people. I think from a social, right-and- wrong perspective, it is evil...But I think there's another list of questions that he asks himself, not good or bad or right or wrong, but how am I going to protect first of all my family, which is my daughter."
You might say that Charles Meade's character in The Secret Circle is very similar to that of John Gilbert (David Anders) in The Vampire Diaries. Like Charles, John does some terrible things because of his hatred for vampires, but near the end of season two, he sacrificed his life to save his daughter Elena (Nina Dobrev). And it would make sense that the two characters are similar, given the fact that the source material for both shows is written by the same author.
You can catch Gale Harold on The Secret Circle Thursdays at 9pm/8c right after The Vampire Diaries on The CW.
