You've seen Kal-El in action from Superman Man of Steel set photos. Now it's time to get a peek at big daddy Jor-El in full Kryptonian regalia. To be fair, the most action you'll see in these photos is Russell Crowe taking a few puffs from a cigarette during a filming break. Still, it reveals a few more hints about the eagerly anticipated flick.
One thing you can discern from Crowe's costume is the similarity in design to the classic Superman costume Jor-El's son will eventually wear. You can see what appears to be a blue bodysuit underneath the robes (note the cape) and armor. The stylized 'S' insignia is clearly visible on the chest plate. The costume has something of a medieval quality to it. Maybe Kryptonians had their own Knights of the Round Table.
It's definitely a rougher, less refined look than the luminescent costumes in the 1978 Superman flick featuring Marlon Brando as Superman's dad. (Although Brando and Russell Crowe do seem to share some noticeable girth in their respective costumes. Did Jor-El have something against a balanced diet?)
In all, the costume can be taken as a positive sign for the film. It looks like director Zack Snyder is keeping this version of Superman distinct from earlier efforts (although it seems Man of Steel is basing its much of its storyline on more recent Supes mythology). Audiences will see how well the new iteration of the classic comic book character plays out when Superman Man of Steel premieres June 14, 2013.
In the meantime, what do you think of Russell Crowe in the Jor-El costume? Does he look like a worthy successor to Marlon Brando?
