Sesame Street continues to address issues of all children in the world as it introduces a new muppet. Muppet Lily will debut in a one-hour special on October 9, 2011, that focuses on poverty and hunger in children. Her family represents a growing problem in the United States where people are struggling with food insecurity.
Country singer Brad Paisley and his wife Kimberly Williams Paisley will star in the Sesame Street special, entitled "Growing Hope Against Hunger." Muppet Lily will join real-life children in sharing their experiences of food insecurity. They will talk about being hungry and how they have received and given help to the needy in their communities. A large number of the affected children in the United States fall into the demographics targeted by the educational show.
Poverty and hunger seem like quite intense topics for the preschool population. But Sesame Street has traditionally done well at broaching tough topics with young ones. Going into the holiday season, there is more emphasis on helping the less fortunate. Kids do not always understand why they are collecting canned foods and raising money to help others. This initiative is a great way to expose them and inspire them to help.
