The Vampire Diaries season 3 continues this week with episode 9, "Homecoming," and it's all about the big dance and the plan to kill Klaus once and for all. Will Mikael be able to do it, or will the midseason finale end with Klaus still around?

In addition to a few promos that have been released for the upcoming episode, there's also now a sneak peek (below) out that shows the preparation going on for the big plan. Elena knows they can't trust Rebekah, pointing to the fact that Bonnie was right to say Klaus is her brother. Rebekah could always turn on them, and that is something they need to consider. That's not the only thing, as Elena's worried about everything that can go wrong and the people who could make that happen. This is why Damon has his own "secret contingency plan" he's not even going to tell Elena. Will they need that contingency plan? Based on the promo that shows Klaus saying they underestimated him and giving an order to "kill her," yes, they will need it. But will it work, or will they wish they had a plan C? Will they have one handy just in case?
Stefan joins them, looking to borrow a tie for the dance. He has to go because he's compelled to protect Elena, and he points out what viewers have to be thinking: dances have never turned out well in the past. At least someone's acknowledging that outright on the show. Will that "tragic" record continue with the Vampire Diaries' Homecoming dance? It is the midseason finale, so there's bound to be some sort of bang and cliffhanger to end it, but who will still be around when the credits begin to roll? The sneak peek ends with Damon taking a grenade from Elena, reminding her that only one of them will heal quickly if it's accidentally set off.
