Recently, Eddie Murphy and Brett Ratner resigned as host and producer (respectively) of the 2012 Academy Awards. Brian Grazer, winner of Best Picture for A Beautiful Mind in 2001, is set to take over producing duties. But who should host?
A campaign has started for the Muppets to do it. The Facebook page for the cause has 19,121 followers. The Twitter account (@MuppetsOscars) has 7,690 followers. Those numbers are continuously growing.
"I'd totally be on board," said Nick Stoller, a co-writer of their upcoming movie. "You could have The Electric Mayhem as the house band!"
Though the idea is extremely popular, there are naysayers. For example, Katey Rich at Cinema Blend had this to say: "The hosts need to be a bonus for the viewers, not the reason to tune in, and it's hard to imagine the Muppets, in their brightly colored puppet glory, could avoid stealing that spotlight."
Ricky Gervais has offered to host both the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. After the "splash" he made at the last Golden Globes, that doesn't seem likely, but time will tell it seems.
