NCIS season 9 continues this week with episode 14, "Life Before His Eyes," and the show is going to ask "what if?" as it celebrates a special milestone, 200 episodes.
Season 9 episode 14 "Life Before His Eyes" spoilers
According to TVLine, "familiar faces such as Mike Franks [will be] presenting Gibbs with possible alternate pasts and presents" in this episode, and Michael Weatherly calls it a "head trip": "There's a floating bullet, we have characters that get placed in sets they weren't really in, we recreated a scene [from years ago] that was pretty intense. A lot of CGI stuff goes on, and it does blow your mind a bit." Weatherly did tease a bit about what to expect in those alternate timelines, such as "Abby and McGee have a different kind of relationship than they do now," and one that made him go, "Oh, is that the guy who would have been 'me' if it wasn't DiNozzo [sitting there]?"
All in all, it sounds like it should be an episode that fans won't want to miss a minute of, especially with all the familiar faces returning for this hour that is sure to be memorable. Abby and McGee's relationship was fun to watch when he was first introduced (especially with Gibbs' "You sleep in the coffin, McGee?" and his reaction), and even though they broke up, there are still plenty of moments of jealousy on both parts. It should be fun to see what their relationship is like in this other timeline. Meanwhile, you also have to wonder about that second tease, especially when you look at the guest star list. Could that be where Pacci comes in, or will he be part of something else?
It's already been revealed that Tony and Ziva will be meeting in different circumstances (teased in a preview here), and Weatherly has teased, "You get a real glimpse into the hellcat she might have become without that guiding hand" of Gibbs'. While Tony is married in this "what if?" scenario, there are still hints of the Tony-Ziva banter everyone's used to already, just in that small clip in the preview. The reason that Ziva never had Gibbs' guidance is that Ari never killed Kate; therefore, when you get to see her, she's not part of the team. Instead, she and Tony are in an interrogation room, and she's handcuffed to the table.
Michael Weatherly did stress that this episode all comes down to Gibbs: "Without question, the most remarkable alternate timeline, truly, belongs to Gibbs. Mark Harmon does a scene in the basement that is so.... Well, I did cry several times watching this, and I did not anticipate that." It's already looking like there will be many bittersweet and sad moments, just with the tease of Gibbs sitting down in a booth with Shannon and Kelly, and it's really no surprise that Mark Harmon's going to give a performance that's going to be memorable and probably perfect (after all, he is perfect as Gibbs).
