Criminal Minds season 7 episode 14 "Closing Time" begins with a couple finding the source of dripping blood. Hotch and Beth are still training together, and their last session ends with him asking her out—poorly. When Rossi, amidst teasing Hotch, finds out about their date, he swears he's going to make sure it happens. The three men were shot in the head and each is missing their genitals. Two were wrapped in plastic. Why wasn't the third?
"For trust not him that hath once broken faith."
The unsub is castrating his victims postmortem, which is personal, but the quick kill is impersonal. Garcia has identified the dead, and each were in town on business. Sean Taylor was gay and the one left uncovered; is his sexuality why he was targeted? The unsub visits a boy at school. He had a rough last night and asks when he can see him next. The boy agrees to come over the next day.
Parker tells the BAU they have another victim, who was left exposed. Hotch talks to Joseph's wife, and Elaine says he used to go to the beach to collect his thoughts. He had lost his job. Morgan and Rossi wonder why he was left unwrapped too, and Garcia reports that none of the victims were sexually assaulted. Prentiss has found a connection: each victim has suffered a loss of some kind.
Garcia found that Sean, who was taking out his frustrations in a gym, rented a car, and the GPS has been deactivated. Joseph's car is missing too. It looks like he's hiding the cars at the wreck yard, where he runs into his (former) best friend Doug, who can't fix what he did.
While the BAU tries to figure out how the unsub's picking his victims, Mike has his next victim and tells Gus he no longer has to suffer. Though Gus tries to argue he feels better, he shoots him.
Gus' body is found at a pier; what does the beach mean to the unsub? His hotel room shows he was heavily drinking, and Rossi suggests he went to find more alcohol. It's once again time to give the profile on Criminal Minds. Their unsub is targeting emotionally distraught men and presents himself as easy to talk to. He may be castrating his victims since he feels emasculated by his own loss. Mike stares at a picture of his family before going to talk to his ex, Andrea. He shouldn't have shown up at Hunter's school because he only has supervised visitation. Mike's not surprised to find Doug there.
All the victims were drinking according to the ME, but Garcia can't find any signs they purchased any alcohol. Rossi realizes they're looking for a bartender. He's right, and Mike may have found his next victim. They realize he's targeting victims with broken hearts, and when Mike finds out another customer recently cheated, he focuses on her, sending the other guy home.
Kelsey's body has been found hacked and dumped. The unsub started cutting her up when she was still alive. She represented the target of his rage. He's escalating, and that means his target's in danger. Doug finds Mike crushing a car even though he no longer works there. He tells him he needs to get past it and do the right thing. Mike's not liking what he's hearing since he broke up his marriage and took away his son. He pushes Doug over the edge onto the compactor before dropping the car on him and crushing both.
Kelsey's husband tells JJ the last thing they did was fight because she cheated. He couldn't get past it. Each victim suffered the end of a relationship as the result of cheating. Sean and Joseph were the ones who cheated. He's showing sympathy to the ones who were cheated on and anger towards the cheaters. Their unsub obviously wanted Doug to suffer, and Garcia finds the custody hearing. At Andrea's, they find out Mike runs a bar and Hunter's father is really Doug. That was Mike's trigger.
Mike finds Hunter at school and makes him come with him. He takes him to the bar, and when he says he needs to tell Doug where they're going so Andrea doesn't worry, Mike tells him Doug's dead. He didn't mean to kill him since he knows what he meant to him. Hunter makes the mistake of yelling that he killed his father.
Upon arriving at the bar, the BAU splits up, and it's JJ who finds Mike and Hunter in the basement. She tries to subdue Mike by having Hunter tell him he knows he's his father. Though Mike has JJ put down her gun, she rushes him and as they fight hand-to-hand, Hunter frees himself. JJ can hold her own, and though she gets Mike down, Hunter has the gun trained on him. She talks him out of it, and Morgan leads Mike out in cuffs. Reid looks over JJ's injuries and thinks she needs a CAT scan. She reassures him and Hotch she's fine. The same can't be said for Hunter.
"You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment if you don't trust enough."
It turns out Morgan's been coaching JJ, and it paid off. She's going to revise her Valentine's Day plans with Will from a night out to take out because of her bruises. Speaking of the holiday, Morgan invites Hotch to join the rest of the singles on the team for drinks, but he has somewhere to be. Hotch shows up at Beth's with a surprise since he never knows when he'll be free. She surprises him with a kiss as they leave, and for once, Hotch is speechless.
