On episode 4, Mathai from Dallas was at the top of the charts on The Voice as she entered the blind auditions with an Adele tune. This is not an easy artist to emulate, so the fact that this teenager was willing to put it all out there on the NBC stage says a lot about her conviction to the task at hand.
It's also interesting to note that this competitor gunning for a win on this arduous TV talent show was once a medical school student. Her brother still is, and her dad is a psychiatrist while her mom is a nurse. The family is of Indian descent, and these folks say their community in Texas adheres to a rather conservative ethic.
But still, with a voice like this contender on The Voice on Monday, the 18-year-old's family is behind Mathai as she strives to live her dream. Even though her mother has a tough time telling others her daughter has quit college to sing, she and her dad are rooting for their girl.
And their girl is an "it" girl when it comes to the complete performer's package: She's beautiful, she's wide-eyed, she's vulnerable, and she's a great talent. With her cover of Adele's Rumor Has It, she displays the artistry of Corinne Bailey Rae while still showing her own personal style.
That style is appreciated right away by Maroon 5's Adam Levine, who turned his chair soon after Mathai started to sound off with her song. This The Voice judge knew immediately that she was a talent to be reckoned with, and he wanted to work with her as soon as he heard her sing. Later, Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green joined Adam by turning their chairs to be big for her, while Christina Aguilera did not.
Still, Xtina is a fan and told Mathai so. "I love Adele and you put your own thing with [the way you sang her song]," Aguilera remarked of this contestant's performance.
That said, Mathai chose Adam Levine to be her mentor on The Voice for season 2 during the blind auditions. Will she regret her decision, or was she smart to pick the man who coached last year's winner? Is this soulful singer going to be a winner too? Please weigh in.
