Criminal Minds season 7 is going to be saying goodbye to Paget Brewster at the end of the season, and there are some details out about the season finale, including how Prentiss will be leaving.
CM Season 7 Spoilers
According to TV Guide, executive producer Erica Messer has revealed, "We decided not to kill her off. We had already buried her, so that would have seemed repetitive." That's definitely true. First of all, killing her off would not only be "repetitive," it would make you wonder why they couldn't come up with another way to say goodbye. Also, it would be pretty difficult to come up with a scenario to kill her off that would be as good as the Ian Doyle arc was last year.
So what will happen? Prentiss is going to "leave the BAU to pursue other things, which mimics what Paget's pursuing in real life. If Paget ever wants to come back, this exit allows the door to be open." That seems to be the best way they can handle this, and since she's obviously going to be missed, they're doing the right thing in making sure there's a way to write her back in if she chooses to return, whether for just one episode or multiple ones. Of course, all this makes you wonder who will be replacing her on the team next year. They're going to have a slot to fill, and hopefully whoever fills it doesn't face the backlash the last new character—Rachel Nichols' Ashley Seaver—did. It is going to be a different situation this time, so that should help. The new person will have big shoes to fill though on this team.
TV Guide also has some more Criminal Minds season 7 finale spoilers, including how it will end. There's going to be an "intimate wedding of a longtime couple...J.J. and Will or Garcia and Kevin." According to Messer, "We wanted to balance out the darkness of the two hours and the bittersweetness of Paget leaving with the flip side of a really good thing. They'll all have a really rough Saturday with a hostage situation and then a really lovely Sunday. To end a season on a happy note instead of blowing something up is very unusual for us." That's true. Just look at the previous season finales. Season 1 ended with Elle in trouble, season 3 with one of their SUVs blowing up, and season 4 with Hotch facing Foyet. It's not like the others ended happily either. Yes, last season showed JJ coming back, but the tone of a finale on this show is generally solemn.
So which couple will be getting married? This week's episode, "I Love You, Tommy Brown," is going to feature Garcia fearing a proposal from Kevin, and even though that does make it sound like she may not say yes, perhaps she takes time to think about it and realizes she wants to marry him. For all you know though, he could not be proposing marriage, and instead Will and JJ could be the ones to get married at the end of the season. Will is supposed to be back in the future, but could he just be back to stand with JJ as Garcia and Kevin get married, or will he and JJ be the ones to make it official? Either way, it sounds like it will be a nice difference to see the team all smiling when the season ends instead of someone's life hanging in the balance.
