Anyone who isn't familiar with the old 70's television series Dark Shadows may think all the hoopla surrounding the new Tim Burton movie is strange. However, that's because they don't know how strong of a cult following that TV show has even today.
The other-worldly series was the first of its kind. It brought the likes of ghosts, witches, werewolves, and vampires into mainstream TV. It also used time travel to advance story lines and provided back story.
Of course it didn't hurt that the cast contained well-established American and British actors, Joan Bennett and Jonathan Frid. They brought a different kind of class to daytime television. With the movie set to première this spring, there are few things novices might want to know.
The Collins family was as dysfunctional as any family today. Whether they're shown in the light of the disco era or 200 years earlier, the family had some serious issues.
There are two houses on the Collins estate. The old house represents the original home of Barnabas Collins. The new house is the home of the 1970's Collins family.
Barnabas Collins is a 200-year-old vampire. While still alive, he dallied with the affections of a powerful witch name Angelique. She cursed him when he rebuffed her love in favor of another woman, his beloved Josette.
Josette killed herself when she discovered what Barnabas was. Yet he tries to recreate her when he's reawakened in the 1970's.
Angelique follows Barnabas through time in hopes of still winning his love. She's delusional and dangerous, threatening to destroy the Collins family forever.
This newest Dark Shadows is more of a comedy than a drama. That's much to the chagrin of many of the show's most ardent fans. They see it as poking fun at a true piece of art. However, Johnny Depp, who plays the part of Barnabas, is a true aficionado of the show. It's unlikely he'll let the satire ruin its magic.
The movie cast has some heavy hitters including Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and Michelle Pfeiffer. It also offers some of Hollywood's newest and most exciting faces, Chloë Grace Moretz, Eva Green, and Johnny Lee Miller.
Dark Shadows hits the theaters May 11, 2012.
