'The Vampire Diaries' Season 3 Episode 17 Spoilers: Stefan and Elena, Sage in the Present

The Vampire Diaries season 3 continues this week with episode 17, "Break On Through," and Stefan's going to be continuing to struggle with his moderation problem, while Elena's trying to help Alaric, and Sage is back in Mystic Falls, this time in the present.

According to TVLine, Paul Wesley has said that Elena seeing Stefan drinking in that alley in "1912" is "just another reason to not trust him, another reason to push away from him," and "brings to light the reality of their relationship, which is they've had so much darkness come between them, it's almost impossible to go back." Is it though? Elena is supposed to be making her choice by the end of the season, and even though it seems "almost impossible" she could still pick Stefan as the one she wants to be with (Wesley also said "Stefan and Elena are very much a possibility"), though that doesn't mean that she's going to tell him or that anything will happen between them before the season ends. That could always be held off on until season 4.

This week's episode is going to see her turning to her ex as she continues on her "mission," and Wesley said, "that mission is what makes them grow closer, and it allows them to have all these conversations about their own relationship." The Vampire Diaries season 3 episode 17 sneak peek (below) does show them interacting, as she stops by the house when she thought it would be empty for a book. He provides her with the information that's in that book, but he also tells her there's nothing she can do if Alaric's going through what Samantha did. As the photos seem to tease, Elena's going to ask Stefan to help out after she finds Meredith covered in blood in the bathroom, where she tried to escape to when fighting Alaric. Will Stefan be able to save Meredith?

Then there's the return of Sage into the Salvatores' lives. Wesley did call her "a bit of a negative influence actually on the two of them, particularly Damon." He pointed to the fact that "she's much wiser and stronger" and "not just some pushover." She's going to be "a threat in present day," and it has been revealed that she's looking for her "one true love" in Finn. She's going to be helping out Damon as he tries to figure out what Rebekah's up to, but just what sort of trouble will she stir up in Mystic Falls before she leaves?
