Dancing with the Stars 2012 began with a bang last Monday as the 12 celebrity/professional couples delivered a solid string of respectable Cha Cha Chas and Foxtrots. The early season greatness continued last night with 12 additional fleet-footed routines. Although some couples have cemented spots atop the judges' leaderboard, others have been less impressive. Here's a look at who will likely find themselves under the harsh glare of the red lights this evening when elimination time rolls around.
Despite her mad skills on the tennis court, superstar athlete Martina Navratilova isn't exactly a natural in the DWTS ballroom—at least, not yet. She had the right attitude throughout her week 2 Jive, but the footwork escaped her, and as a result, she and partner Tony Dovolani trail the pack with a two-week total of just 37 points. That puts them a whopping 15 points behind current leaders Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas, and in serious danger of elimination, based solely on scores.
Just slightly above Navratilova and Dovolani in the score pecking order are actress Melissa Gilbert and Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Though the Little House on the Prairie alum has tons of potential, both of her dances have been painfully tentative. She's yet to wow judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Len Goodman, and Bruno Tonioli. Given that she hasn't been in the public eye in a truly noticeable way since her youth, Gilbert may find herself at a disadvantage with voters. Fortunately, however, she's paired with Chmerkovskiy, and the ladies have historically loved the Ukrainian hoofer.
Finally, singer Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff, who is Dancing's reigning pro champ, could very well find themselves ousted by night's end. It's not that DeGraw has been particularly bad in the ballroom. His dances have simply been a bit forgettable. With a cast loaded with surprisingly talented celebs, average isn't good enough to win the Mirrorball trophy. If DeGraw survives the elimination, he'll need to step it up in a very big way during week 3.
Will one of these three couples get the boot, or does a surprise loom for the Dancing with the Stars 2012 week 2 results show? It would be shocking to see any of the other participants get the boot so early in the season. However, voters are fickle don't always reward the best dancers. Not even leaderboard topper Jenkins is safe; she's not well-known in the US, so she may not get the votes she needs to stay alive in the competition. Tune in tonight at 9 PM ET/PT to see what happens.
