The Vampire Diaries season 3 finale is going to be showing Elena's parents for the first time on May 10 in "The Departed." It's all part of the flashback that will show how they died—and how Elena could've died if Stefan hadn't rescued her.
Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 22 "The Departed" Spoilers
TV Guide has a first look photo from this episode, showing Nina Dobrev with James MacDonald and Erin Beute, the actors who will be playing Elena's parents. It's a nice family shot, but it's short-lived. This episode is going to show "happy family scenes," which is where Sara Canning's return as Aunt Jenna comes in, and the car accident on the bridge. As executive producer Julie Plec puts it, "One of the things we want to do in the finale is explore a time for Elena when life was simpler. She had no parents and no vampires in her life."
Elena's life is anything but simple now, and she's dealing with things that no high school student should have to. She has lost many people in her life, and the day she lost her parents was a day she could've died as well, if it wasn't for Stefan saving her. With the tease that Elena could be making her decision between Damon and Stefan before the season's over—at least in her head and heart—what better to show than a moment where one of them saved her life? With everything Elena has gone through, it only makes sense to also show some moments where everything was so much easier for her. She didn't know about vampires, she had some happy moments with her family, and her parents were alive. With Canning returning as Jenna, this sounds like it should be a strong season finale for the CW drama.
Nina Dobrev, who was certified in scuba diving before they filmed these scenes, talked about shooing these scenes for the Vampire Diaries season 3 finale: "It's something I hopefully will never have to experience in real life — trying to survive underwater while trying to save other people. It was quite intense and a little scary. I'm used to being underwater with a tank, but having to act without the tank is completely different. We were in the water two days for eight hours a day. By the end, I was exhausted and slept like a baby." It sounds like a tiring experience, but it also sounds it should translate to some pretty good—and exciting—flashbacks when the episode airs. It's a big moment in Elena's past, and it is something that seemed inevitable for the series to show. When better than in a season finale?
