Battleship, the thunderous new sea, sky, and land, alien invasion epic starring Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker, and Rihanna, opens in the UK today.
Digital Spy described it as "Transformers meets Top Gun", and that's pretty much this movie's MO. Director Peter Berg (Very Bad Things, Friday Night Lights, and the superb Hancock), aims for the popcorn crowd with this generic offering (based on the Hasbro board game), and delivers CGI thrills, impressive action sequences and laughs along the way.
The film follows a familiar plot: rebel finds inner hero when the going gets tough. Starring Taylor Kitsch as rebellious Alex Hopper, virtually press-ganged into the navy by his brother, Stone (played by Skarsgard), Alex proves his mettle when his ship, fellow crew members - and later the whole planet - are attacked by an alien army.
Cue high-tech carnage (the "shredders" are fantastic), sexy close-ups, one-liners galore, and the kind of chest-thumping that would make even Independence Day blush. But it's all good, blockbuster fun. Rihanna, gets her film debut on as a believably kick-ass Petty officer Cora Raikes, and Liam Neeson is splendidly authoritarian yet paternal as Admiral Shane.
If you're looking for originality or deep, ponderous sci-fi, this isn't the film for you. But if supersized action with aliens thrown in, glam girls with big guns, and heroes in uniform turns you on - look no further. Released in time for the school Easter holidays in the UK, Battleship should keep the little darlings quiet for ... oh, 131 minutes.
