The Vampire Diaries season 3 continues next week with episode 20, "Do Not Go Gentle," and the events of the previous episode are going to affect what's coming up.

Based on the clip that has been released, at least one person is going to be missing out on the dance...or at least saying they will be. Even if you haven't seen the end of episode 19, "Heart of Darkness," in which Alaric found out that Esther has possessed Rebekah, you could tell something's very off in the conversation between Damon and Alaric seen below.

In the Vampire Diaries season 3 episode 20 sneak peek from "Do Not Go Gentle," Alaric claims he's busy getting his head together and woke up alone, the stake gone, when Damon asks if Rebekah got the stake. After telling the vampire he's headed to someplace secluded since he's still blacking out and therefore a threat, he hangs up. Damon's rightfully confused. Why does it seem likely that after that clip, it will be revealed that Esther-possessed Rebekah is standing with Alaric?

Even without the end of the last episode, there's also the fact that in the "Do Not Go Gentle" promo, Alaric tells Elena, "You think I'm not myself. But this is who I really am." Will Damon realize that something's not quite right after that phone conversation? Will that be what leads to him and Meredith working together?
