The Vampire Diaries' season 3 finale, "The Departed," will be flashing back to when Elena's parents (and Jenna) were still alive, and she didn't know about vampires. It was easier back then.
Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 22 "The Departed" Spoilers
TVLine has a new promotional photo from "The Departed" showing one of those flashback moments. It's a look at Elena (Nina Dobrev) in the kitchen with her mother, Miranda, played by Erin Beute, and Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning's back for the flashbacks). It's a nice, normal, scene, and the type that isn't exactly normal on this show. However, back then, it was for Elena. When they killed Jenna off last season, you had to hope that they'd find a way to bring Sara Canning back and fortunately, they did and this is it. As executive producer Julie Plec explains, "Elena, going through a particularly rough time, reflects back on a [period] in her life when things were much more simple." That's going to include seeing her parents' death on the bridge and Stefan saving Elena.
It was inevitable that the series would bring in some flashbacks to show Elena's life with her parents, and when better than at the end of The Vampire Diaries season 3, which has shown Elena going through a lot, especially with Klaus' plan to leave Mystic Falls with Elena to use her to create more hybrids coming back to the show in episode 21, "Before Sunset." So why wouldn't she then think about when life didn't include everything she's going through, both the things that put her life in danger and those that put her heart in danger. The season finale is going to feature her making a decision about Damon and Stefan. Will the fact that Stefan saved her and she's going to think about that sway her towards choosing him?
