April 25 marked Queen night on American Idol 2012 as each of the finalists were charged with performing a classic hit by the popular band as well as a pick of their own. So how did individualistic, grey shirt-loving Phillip Phillips fare with his rendition of "Fat Bottomed Girls"?
The Georgia native hit the Idol stage wearing an open tan button-down shirt over a muted blue t-shirt. It was hard to hear him over the amped up volume of the back-up singers at first, but eventually, his trademark Dave Matthews-esque Phillip sound kicked in. It was good, but he really needs to get his crazy--and often distracting--facial expressions under control if he wants to do stage shows down the line.
Steven Tyler said "I love watching you sing" and "I love watching you run out of breath." He also loved the song choice. Jennifer Lopez enjoyed his ability to "give different flavors" with each performance. Randy Jackson said he "liked it" but wasn't "jumping up and down." Following his critique, Phillip insisted that he's on the show to take criticism, and that performing Queen was a resume-maker.
But was it good enough to earn the all-important votes? Tune in to Thursday's American Idol 2012 results show to find out.
