The Vampire Diaries season 3 comes to an end this week with episode 22, "The Departed," which will have scenes in the past and in the present. There's going to be some similarities between the flashback and the current scenes.
Vampire Diaries Season 3 Episode 22 "The Departed" Spoilers
According to TV Guide, "Elena and Matt's impending accident will seem oddly reminiscent of the Gilbert family crash—including who saves them." Will that crash be what leads to the flashback of the car accident that caused Elena's parents' deaths? Executive producer Julie Plec has made it clear "that was an accident. Period. End of story. No supernatural influence." However, it was Stefan who saved Elena. Will Stefan be the one to save Elena and Matt in the present? That's what that recent tease seems to be pointing to.
The previews out for The Vampire Diaries season 3 finale do show Matt and Elena going over the bridge and Rebekah watching. One of the sneak peeks already shows Stefan showing up at Elena's house while she's talking to Matt. It looks like he's going to know at least that they could be heading somewhere, so it's not much of a stretch to imagine him being the one to save her—especially since that would lead to a pretty nice parallel in the episode between the past and present and Elena's flashbacks and what she's going through currently.
What will this mean for Elena as she's trying to make her choice between Stefan and Damon? Photos and previews have already shown that she's going to be spending time with Stefan in this episode, but will that necessarily mean she'll be choosing him in the end? Anything could happen, but one thing is certain: Elena will be making a decision in the finale.
