American Idol 2012 continued May 9 with performances by the top 4 finalists. Although it was by and large a good night for the four youngsters, it wasn't all wine and roses, as Jessica Sanchez and Hollie Cavanagh's version of "Eternal Flame" was more whiff than wonderful.
Hollie and Jessica started their rendition of the Bangles' mega hit seated in side-by-side swings suspended from the ceiling. Things didn't go well for the pair from the get-go. It may have been a microphone issue, but it sounded like Jessica messed up the first line of the song. Hollie's voice was true to the original version, but Jessica's much deeper, more warbling presentation didn't fit the song at all. Worst of all, it felt more like a battle of divas than a cooperative duet. They're both talented singers, but it wasn't a good duet.
Randy Jackson called it "a little strange for me," and knocked Jessica for staying in the lower registers. He didn't "get the best of either" of them from the number. Jennifer Lopez was kinder, noting that the "sweetness" and "power" from both girls was there. Steven Tyler simply said it wasn't as good as the original, and joked about the top 4 becoming America's "favorite swingers" as Phillip Phillips and Joshua Ledet took residence in the swings and played in the background.
Will Jessica Sanchez and Hollie Cavanagh lose votes over an ill-delivered duet? Tune in to Thursday's American Idol 2012 top 4 results show and find out.
