The network is not holding its upfronts (when the networks announce their upcoming schedules) until next week, but news has been slowly leaking out and there is sad news for Kristen Chenoweth fans. GCB has been cancelled and will not return to ABC in the fall (Zap2it).
The show had trouble from the beginning with some objecting to the original title Good Christian Bitches. Actually, there were objections to the whole idea. The show was inspired by the novel by Kim Gatlin of the same name. ABC changed the title to Good Christian Belles and finally to GCB over the controversy.
Some believed the show mocked Christians and could not get over that belief, even though Chenoweth, an avowed Christian herself, tried to convince them otherwise. And indeed, while the show did at times seem to skirt that line, it also had scenes with characters explaining their own faith in a way not often seen on a prime time drama.
In recent weeks, the show seemed to be turning around creatively, with Amanda (Leslie Bibb) incorporated into more and more scenes with Carlene (Chenoweth), Cricket (Miriam Schorr) and Sharon (Jennifer Aspen). When the women worked together, whether as frenemies or as antagonists, the scenes always crackled with more energy than apart. Annie Potts as Gigi, Amanda's mom, reminded everyone that it has been entirely too long since she was on television. All in all, it's a shame that ABC could not give the show a second chance, but the ratings had dropped in recent weeks so it is not surprising.
It wasn't all doom and gloom for mid-season dramas. Scandal, Shonda Rhimes' latest project, has been renewed. So fans of that show will be able to see just where this thing with Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) is going.
