Grey's Anatomy fans are still trying to deal with the death of Lexie Grey on the series. It was sudden, and no fan thought it was possible to kill a character that shares the same name of the show. She might not be Meredith Grey, but when contract issues came, it was obvious that Lexie might step into the shoes of the star for this ABC drama.
Why did Lexie Grey, played by Chyler Leigh, get killed off though? Shonda Rhimes played coy about the reasons for the departure. She said the following, according to Wet Paint:
"Stuff that happens inside our family is stuff that happens inside our family. I have so much respect for Chyler, and the decision was really, it was very hard for everybody involved and I want to respect her privacy on that."
Now, fans might remember at the start of the season Lexie Grey wasn't around much at all. Fans began to wonder back then about her future on the ABC drama. Some episodes early in season eight of Grey's Anatomy, she wasn't seen at all, and there were others where she was seen for a minute or two scene and then vanished again for the rest of the episode.
Her disappearance was explained by the actress asking for more time off to spend with her family. Now jump ahead to this decision and her death. Rhimes has said it has been in the works for months in recent interviews.
What does this mean? Was Chyler Leigh ready for more time at home with her family? That does seem a likely explanation, but it is far different than what she said last summer about becoming the Grey of the series if Ellen Pompeo left.
Lexie's death leaves so many unanswered questions, and it will leave a very sad Mark Sloan when this series returns for season nine. That is if he lives.
