Grey's Anatomy season 8 ended with Chyler Leigh's character Lexie suffering fatal injuries in the plane crash, which led to an emotional goodbye scene for her and Mark just before she died. There has been some speculation about why the show went in this direction, and now Chyler Leigh has revealed why she left.
Grey's Star Explains Exit
The beginning of the season began with Leigh on "an extended summer hiatus to spend time with her family," and some have pointed to that as a sign foreshadowing this end. But what really happened? Chyler Leigh told TVLine, "Earlier this year, I made the decision that Season eight would be my last on 'Grey's Anatomy.' I met with Shonda and we worked together to give Lexie's story appropriate closure. I am very lucky to have worked with this amazing cast and crew for five seasons. My experience on 'Grey's Anatomy' is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life. I want to take this time to say thank you to the fans. Your unconditional love and support have made these last five years very special for me. I look forward to my next chapter and I hope you will continue to follow me on my journey."
Lexie did get the closure that the character needed, and part of that was a tease of what her future with Mark could have looked like in their goodbye—married, with children of their own. In that dream future, they were together, in love, and life was perfect. While it's too bad that fans won't get to see that future for them, at least they got to hear about it. That's what things could've looked like for them, and while their storyline may not have ended the way fans had hoped, they did at least get that.
This statement from Leigh does help address many questions fans have had, and while Shonda Rhimes had tweeted that "it was a decision that Chyler and I came to together," this statement is something that should make fans happy. After all, they do want to hear from the actress herself. The exit is something Leigh wanted, and it's always possible now that she could pop up guest starring on another show since she mentions the "next chapter" and following her on it. However, it's not looking like she's going to be showing up as Lexie on Grey's again. There are only so many times you can bring someone back from the dead on a medical drama (especially when it didn't go well the first time around). Still, Lexie (and Chyler Leigh) will be missed on Grey's.
