The Vampire Diaries will return in the fall with season four, and that means fans have a long summer ahead of them. Julie Plec is trying to fill in the blanks and give fans more details about the series to hold them over until the new episodes arrive. In a recent interview with Forever Young Adult, she spoke about both Damon and Alaric, their characters and why she loves to write about both of them.
As a writer and a viewer herself, Plec admits being a fan of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. This was the series before True Blood, Moonlight, and The Vampire Diaries that made vampires huge on television. Plec compares Damon, played by Ian Somerhalder, to the character of Buffy, and she admits why she loves writing his character. She said the following, according to Wet Paint:
"Damon gets to be our Buffy. Damon gets to have the sassy comeback, and the fun lingo, and sarcasm, and the over-the-top dialog because Damon himself is so cool that he can get away with it."
It is because of this witty dialogue that she loves to write for him. Damon does seem to have all the best lines on the series. He will have more chances to use them as he deals with Elena's transition and what comes next in season four.
As for Alaric, that character has grown and changed. He entered the series as a vampire slayer, but once he became friends with the vampire element in town that changed. Plec does admit that she had trouble with his character, but by the end of the season three she and the writers were able to bring Alaric full circle. She said the following:
"So, as a storyteller, we fumbled a little bit on his character and it took us a little while to recover from that to give him a purpose and a point of view. And one of the reasons why this last season I love so much for him is that he finally found his way as a guardian to our kids, but then also we got to explore his dark side and then actually capitalize on his dark side and return him to a form of what he actually entered the show to be, which was a vampire slayer."
Fans have not seen the last of Alaric either. He can return. Jeremy does have the ability to see him, so the door is open for visits from Alaric. Matt Davis does have his own series coming to CW at midseason too though. Cult will arrive in the spring.
What do you think? Are you ready to see what Damon says next? Are you already missing Alaric?
