Madagascar 3 and Prometheus scored big at the box office this past weekend, easily unseating Snow White and the Huntsman for the top box office spots. SWATH fizzled during its second weekend, pulling in just $23 million. That's almost $37 million short of the top-rated film and still $27 million short of the second place winner.
The family oriented film about New York Zoo animals on an adventure while trying to get back home to the Big Apple, continued to prove it has staying power. Some believe the third installment of the family oriented film is the best one yet. It stunned, pulling in an amazing $60.4 million. However, it didn't out distance the first Madagascar film. It pulled in nearly that same amount a few years back.
Ridley Scott's long-awaited prequel to his popular Alien franchise did remarkably well too. Like its famous predecessor, Prometheus didn't blow all box office records but it scored very well with $50 million. It's expected to continue along that line as word-of-mouth advertising grows stronger.
No doubt, SWATH proved a disappointing third place. The studio had hoped to keep the momentum going for another week or two. Sadly, it doesn't seem that will happen.
In the number four spot, Men in Black 3 continued to do reasonably well. At number five was The Avengers, which is finally losing some real steam. The last five films in the top 10 include: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, What to Expect When You're Expecting, Battleship, The Dictator and Moonrise Kingdom.
