Duets 2012, the newest reality singing competition featuring a slate of successful musical mentors and their fledgling proteges, continued July 5 on ABC. But before the show began in earnest, the results of last week's big vote were revealed, and one hopeful found herself falling short of the final four.
Following a spicy opening rendition of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by show mentors Robin Thicke and Jennifer Nettles, host Quddus got down to the business of results. After he was joined on stage by Team Kelly Clarkson's Jason Farol, Team Jennifer's John Glosson and J Rome, Team John Legend's Bridget Carrington, and Team Robin's Olivia Chisholm, he addressed them one at a time.
The unassuming Jason was first to be declared safe. Olivia found herself in the bottom two, while J Rome's version of "Without You" earned him more time in the competition. John also found himself safe, leaving Bridget with Olivia at the bottom of America's weekly chart.
The two gals—Bridget in a long, fitted yellow gown, and Olivia in white—waited nervously for the news. After a long pause, Olivia was dismissed from the competition. Robin joined Olivia on stage and called her "an amazing human being" with lots of potential.
Although it's sad that the only two women left on the show found themselves at the bottom of the vote, it's not entirely surprising that Olivia Chisholm got the boot. Her voice was, all in all, the weakest left in the bunch. It has a lovely lilting quality, but her breath control was often off, which made her sound a little less than golden. Fortunately, at only 21, she has plenty of time to grow into an artist, and the exposure she's gained from appearing on the show should serve her well in the future.
Tune in to the next episode of Duets 2012 on July 12 to see which of the final four will come up on the short end of the voting.
