With the Duets 2012 grand finale just a week away, the pressure was on for top three finalists Jason Farol, J Rome and John Glosson during the July 12 broadcast. The three men were tasked with singing one duet and one solo each in a quest for viewer votes. Unlikely hopeful Jason rose to the occasion with both of his selections, earning praise from the mentors and opening the door for a serious shot at the coveted title.
For his duet with mentor Kelly Clarkson, Jason chose "Me and Mrs. Jones" by Billy Paul. Why? Because it saved him from the bottom two earlier in the season. The performance was a strong one, and showed off the popular and single singer's increased confidence.
Jennifer Nettles called him "this yummy little soul singer in a skinny little filipino body." Though he appreciated the effort, John Legend said he didn't think it was the best song for Jason, and viewed it as a step in the wrong direction. Robin Thicke said he could "see why teenage girls are going crazy for you," but he missed the "naughtiness" that he thought should've been part of the performance.
Later in the hour, Jason closed out the show with a solo rendition of Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby." It was fun and extraordinarily high-energy, but Jason seemed to have issues with breath control by the end. Robin thought he "brought the house down," while John affirmed the song choice, deeming it "the right vein" for the young singer.
Will Jason Farol pull off the win when Duets 2012 concludes July 19 on ABC? Tune in for the big reveal.
