Supernatural returns to the CW this fall on October 3 with its eighth season, and the cast and producers were at this weekend's Comic-Con to preview what to expect. Gather.com got the chance to sit down with them in the press room and talk about what's coming up.
SPN Season 8 Spoilers from Comic-Con
When season 7 ended, they had finally found a way to kill Dick Roman. However, there was, of course, a catch, and it left Dean and Castiel in purgatory. Castiel seemingly left Dean there, but it still has yet to be determined just where he went. As Jensen Ackles previews in the video below, "A year has passed, up top anyway. How long that is in purgatory, yet to be seen." Just like time passes differently in hell, the same could be true for purgatory. While the brothers are going to be reunited quickly, which will make fans happy, Supernatural season 8 will be using flashbacks to show "what life was life, the relationships that he made down there and how that helped him get out, which also gets touched on heavily in the first episode—how he gets out." The flashbacks will continue throughout the season to show "what happened while he was there."
Now Dean has been to heaven, hell, and purgatory. The fourth season explored what happened when he returned from hell and his time being tortured and torturing, and Ackles does tease what this time in purgatory could mean for Dean: "From what I've seen so far and from what I've read, I think there is more a sense of clarity for him...he understands his purpose and he understands that even though times might get tough and he might feel like throwing in the towel, he knows that this is what he's here to do."
However, while "He has a clearer sense of what he's doing," that's not true for his brother: "Sam doesn't. Sam had a year basically without him and smelled the roses a little bit. So now he's gotta kind of reel his brother back in and be like, 'Listen man, that's not our life. We don't do that.'" The beginning of season 6 saw Dean living with Lisa and Ben, but that was never going to work out. It's going to be "a bit of a reversal" this time. As Jared Padalecki previews here, Sam has a new love interest and "officially quit," with "everybody [he knows] dead or somewhere else." Of course that can't last for long, and Dean's going to be the one to bring him back.
Ackles also talks a bit about the final scene of Castiel seemingly abandoning Dean in purgatory: "Once we start seeing what life was like down there, and we will touch on that, there will be an explanation as to where he went and what he did. ...It wasn't an abandon ship. Where he goes will be revealed throughout these flashbacks."
Finally, Jensen Ackles talks a bit about directing. He'll be directing for the third time this season, and his episode is slated to air third in the season though it's being filmed first. He says he comes from the "Kim Manners school of thought": "I really listened to him a lot when he was directing, and I watched how he did things."
