So You Think You Can Dance 2012 bade a fond farewell to two more finalists at the close of the July 25 performance show, trimming the field to just 14 dancers entering the two-week Olympic hiatus. So which hopefuls were shown the door and who earned the coveted judges' saves from Nigel Lythgoe and the rest of the SYTYCD panel?
With very little ado, host Cat Deeley called the top 16 forward to begin the results portion of the show following the night's eight performances. Moments later, Amber Jackson, Lindsay Arnold, Eliana Girard, George Lawrence, Brandon Mitchell and Dareian Kujawa found themselves in danger of elimination. After Cat dismissed the "safe" dancers, she turned to the judges. Having previously held court with his cohorts, Nigel asked Amber, Eliana, Brandon and Dareian to dance for their lives.
Amber danced first, to Lana Del Rey's "This is What Makes Us Girls." Her moves were powerful, but vaguely frenetic and tentative. Brandon followed with a routine set to "I Want it All Back." He had great energy, but not a lot of content as far as dance goes. Eliana danced third, to "Near Light," and showed off her impressive extensions and control. Dareian closed out the save-me routines with an "Ordinary People" routine that showed off his athleticism and precision. Based on the save-me dances, Eliana and Dareian should've earned spots in the top 14, but did they?
After mulling the tough decision, Nigel and fellow judges Mary Murphy and Christina Applegate delivered the news of the night. Addressing the girls first, he assured the trio that all of them had received thousands of votes, and called it "a terrible situation" before announcing that they'd decided to save Lindsay, who has "more potential to grow." Joining Lindsay on the safe list was Eliana, leaving Amber Jackson as the odd girl out. She called appearing on the show "an amazing experience".
Moments later, the three guys faced the judges. Nigel was puzzled by George's presence in the bottom three given his strong performance last week, and quickly granted him a save. Nigel called Dareian's save yourself routine "incredible," which was good enough to earn him the second save, leaving Brandon Mitchell out in the cold. Brandon took the bad news with a smile, and thanked Jesus for helping him along the way. He joyfully called the experience "so fun."
