The 50 Shades of Grey movie has a few current favorites to play Christian Grey, with Matt Bomer and Ian Somerhalder being two of the actors with the biggest fan followings. However, now it seems that Matt's sexual orientation is making some critics wonder if he could adequately portray an extremely sexual straight man like Grey.
Interestingly enough, the fact that Matt is gay really hasn't come up all that much before now. He's a decent actor and definitely looks the part, so isn't that enough?
Apparently it's not for some people -- according to the International Business Times, there are critics out there who don't think that he could pull off playing Christian because of his sexual orientation. This seems a bit silly since Matt has shown that he can play a straight man perfectly fine on White Collar. And how could any woman complain about Matt Bomer getting cast in the 50 Shades of Grey movie after seeing him as a life-sized Ken doll in Magic Mike?
Matt obviously doesn't want being gay to affect what roles he gets. Here's what he said about it:
"What we really have to do is stop the adjective before the job title -- whether it's 'black actor,' a 'gay actor' or 'anything actor. Everybody thinks that equality comes from identifying people, and that's not where equality comes from. Equality comes from treating everybody the same regardless of who they are. I hope the media and the press catches on to that because it's time to move out of 1992."
He makes a great point, but obviously the world just isn't there yet.
Straight actors who play gay men often get critical acclaim for their movie roles - Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger's movie Brokeback Mountain got tons of attention (it could be argued that Heath should have gotten even more since his performance in that movie was actually better than what he did in The Dark Knight), and Sean Penn won an Oscar for Milk. Tom Hanks also snagged a naked gold man for Philadelphia. So if it's okay for straight actors to go gay, what's wrong with casting gay actors as straight guys? Neil Patrick Harris has done it for years on How I Met Your Mother, so it seems silly to act like it's suddenly a big issue.
According to the poll on IB Times, it's actually not a big issue to most Fifty fans -- 77 percent of voters say that Matt being gay doesn't matter to them.
But what do you think - are critics right to question Matt's ability to play Christian Grey, or are they being ridiculous by acting like sexual orientation matters when it comes to acting?
