Lionsgate announced Wednesday that the coveted part of Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has gone to rising star Sam Claflin.
It's not a huge surprise that Claflin won the part. He'd been rumored to be the first choice for the role of the former Hunger Games winner since last month. Still, it's a bit of a coup for both Claflin and the franchise. The actor gets to show what he can do in yet another big budget movie, and Catching Fire gets to add some more star power to its ever-growing cast.
The English actor, 24, has already begun to make somewhat of a name for himself. Along with roles in several high-profile projects on British TV, he also co-starred in 2011's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, with Johnny Depp, and this year's Snow White and the Huntsman, with Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron.
Though Finnick is one of many past winning tributes who show up in Catching Fire to compete in the Quarter Quell, he's a key character due to his interactions with Katniss. So casting a somewhat well-known actor like Sam Claflin as Finnick is probably a good move on the filmmakers' part.
Not that the franchise really needs any extra buzz at this point! If the success of the first movie and the excitement over its recent release on DVD are any indication, this sequel will have no trouble becoming a major hit when it arrives in theaters next year.
