The Walking Dead returns to AMC for its third season, which will introduce the prison, Michonne, Woodbury, and the Governor, and AMC has been posting interviews from the set. The latest is out, with showrunner Glen Mazzara.
Walking Dead Season 3 Spoilers
According to Mazzara, "the new horror becomes what people will do to survive and to protect each other in this world. And what they're willing to sacrifice to achieve their ambition." The series is "very much a human drama," and that's where the new characters coming to the show, "particularly The Governor," come into play. Speaking of The Governor, Mazzara previewed that with his "humanity so prevalent when he commits atrocious acts...they'll be that much more horrifying." The Governor is a character fans have waited to see on the show for some time now, and with everything that's been released, it looks like they won't be disappointed. Making him a character with "a real soul" and "a depth and intelligence" should make him even better as a villain, and so far, David Morrissey seems like he's going to do quite well with the part.
Mazzara called The Walking Dead season 3 "very adrenalized," teasing that so much will be happening "the audience won't be able to catch their breath and figure out what's going on." That's very much part of the feel that "there really is no escape" from the apocalypse the survivors have found themselves in. Considering everything that's been teased so far, with The Governor being introduced and the survivors moving to the prison, it's going to be a jam-packed season. The survivors have been through a lot to get where they are, and no one's safe, with another death teased to come at some point. Who will survive their time in the prison and facing The Governor?
When season 2 ended, Rick took over as leader of the survivors, and that will of course come into play in season 3, as Mazzara said, "Rick's reign is initially successful in the fact that they do discover this prison and that proves at first that Rick was right that there's a place out there that perhaps they can be safe. The question becomes how far can he push the group? What is the breaking point? And Rick will certainly have to deal with how far can he push himself and what is his breaking point." Rick is going to be part of the reason why these survivors make it as long as they do, but when will enough be enough? There's got to be a point where he reaches that breaking point, and it seems likely to come sooner rather than later with everything going on. They'll be fighting their way into the prison and Rick will have to hold the group together through that. With the confrontation with The Governor coming up, will it perhaps fall on his right-hand man Daryl to hold everyone together when he breaks?
Finally, Mazzara previewed a "big sort of plot twist for both [Woodbury and the prison] that occurs in the middle of the season." Rick and The Governor will be crossing paths, as teased in the Comic-Con trailer out (below), and there is the matter of Merle being with The Governor, while his brother Daryl is on Rick's side. Will any of that have anything to do with this twist coming up? It seems likely that will end the first half of the season, much like Sophia being revealed as a walker and Rick killing her ended the first half of season 2.
