Grey's Anatomy season 9 may not be airing a new episode this week, but there are new spoilers out in the form of the press release for episode 4, "I Saw Her Standing There," directed by Kevin McKidd and airing on October 25.
Grey's Season 9 Episode 4 "I Saw Her Standing There" Official Description
"Aware that Derek might never operate again, Meredith stops talking about the surgeries she's performing. Meanwhile, Richard calls on Dr. Catherine Avery to help him perform a complicated procedure, as things continue to heat up between Jackson and April; and Arizona's struggle to accept her fate forces Callie and Alex to face their guilt."
Derek is going to have to face the harsh reality that he may not be entering an OR again after the injury he suffered in the plane crash, something that is hard to imagine just as a fan. Could Derek really be relegated to just teaching from now on? The flashbacks in the second episode of the season, "Remember the Time," showed him doing that, but it just seemed wrong and didn't work out like it should have. But as the premiere showed for the present, his hand went numb when he did try to operate again, so his future as a surgeon is looking bleak. However, you do have to wonder about Derek's reaction to Meredith not talking about her surgeries. On the one hand, it is considerate to not remind Derek of what he can't do at the moment. However, on the other hand, it is going to be obvious what she's doing and he could see it as her giving up on him.
It sounds like things will be going well for Jackson and April in this Grey's episode, but what will happen with his mother around? Will that have any affect on their relationship? What will Catherine think of her son's relationship? How will Jackson react to seeing Catherine and Richard together, even if it is just in a professional capacity, after what he discovered about their relationship? Will Richard and Catherine get together once again since she's in town?
Finally, there's the matter of Arizona, whose feelings towards Callie and Alex were made clear in the first two episodes. She hates Callie for cutting off her leg, and she hates Alex for being the reason why she was on the plane in the first place. Arizona is going to slowly accept what happened to her this season, and Shonda Rhimes has teased that she'll be getting back to her life. It's going to take time, and the show has already set up for some guilt on Callie and Alex's part; it was just a matter of time before that became one of the bigger parts of an episode instead of just something briefly addressed, and it sounds like that's going to happen in this episode. What will Arizona's mindset be by the end of "I Saw Her Standing There"? How will Callie facing her guilt affect her and Arizona's relationship at this point in time? What will Alex and his guilt mean for his work and his personal life? The premiere saw him sleeping around; will that change with this episode?
