Diva Week seemed an odd theme for The X Factor USA 2012's mixed-gender lineup, but the boys of Emblem3 proved November 14 that emotionally evocative, vocally dominant performances aren't reserved for just girls.
The Huntington Beach, Calif. trio comprised of brothers Keaton and Wesley Stromberg and friend Drew Chadwick entered their pre-show segment still reeling from the disappointment of placing only sixth during last week's all-important debut viewer vote. After wallowing for a little while, they realized that it wasn't all bad: Being in the middle of the pack gave them motivation to work harder and stay dedicated to the cause of winning the $5 million grand prize.
Their live rendition of Alicia Keys's "No One" was a powerhouse of a performance. They harmonized well, sang with great energy and spirit, and played to the crowd like seasoned pros. These guys know what they're doing, and their talent is, to use the term Britney Spears seems to favor, "amazing."
Over 25s mentor LA Reid praised the trio's "perfect vocal blend" and called them "complete superstars." Britney declared "I totally get why the girls are swooned by you... you guys are... heartthrobs." Demi Lovato appreciated their improvement over last week. Finally, Groups mentor Simon Cowell again touched on their sixth place finish last week, assuring them "there is no way you should be that low" in the standings. He thought they were "absolutely brilliant" and praised them for all of their hard work.
It seems a given, considering the screaming girls in the audience during the live show, that Emblem3 will advance safely to the top 10. But will their ranking improve? Possibly, but there were a number of solid performances during the November 14 show, so it's hard to tell.
