Saturday morning, Nov. 24, spelled the end to Justin Bieber's reign as the hottest pop sensation—at least partially. But the "Boyfriend" singer wasn't toppled by another hot young heartthrob on the music scene, and he isn't giving up his crown to British-Irish boy super-group One Direction. Nor does his lovers' spats with girlfriend, Selena Gomez, have anything to do with his drop in status. Rather, the Biebs has been outpaced by a Korean rapper—at least on YouTube.
The phenomenon who is PSY has handily skyrocketed to fame, sweeping everyone onto their feet with his catchy, electro-pop "Gangnam Style." And the accompanying dance is even be better than the song. As Billboard confirms, his video clip has earned approximately 803,761,000 views (a number that's rapidly growing by the minute!) since it was posted on July 15, 2012, which has outpaced YouTube's longstanding first-place performer, Bieber's "Baby", which has garnered approximately 803,732,000 views since its February 2010 release.
"#GangnamStyle just became the most watched video @YouTube!! #History," the rapper posted to Twitter, no doubt thrilled that he managed to outpace Justin Bieber's two-year record in a matter of a few months.
Bieber may have Ludacris, a floppy hair cut and cute boy-next-door moves in "Baby", but PSY has just the right recipe of the incongruous and the bizarre—plus a really hot pair of shades.
The irony is that the Korean sensation has signed to Scooter Braun's Schoolboy Records—Bieber's same label, which also represents Carly Rae Jepsen, who herself had quite the catchy song of the past summer with "Call Me Maybe". As for Schoolboy, well, it has another star student on its hands in PSY. Hopefully, Bieber isn't the jealous type.
