NCIS season 10 continued with episode 8, "Gone." Navy Captain David Wade was picking up his daughter, Lydia, and her friend, Rosie, from work outside a movie theater when guys tried to kidnap them. He intervened, and while Lydia ran inside, they shot him and took Rosie. When Tony got to work, he was upset about the early hour, but he quickly refocused when he learned Ziva was in a good mood because she had been talking to Shmeil, a good friend from Israel with whom she shared things she wouldn't tell anyone else. Tony argued that the post-elevator them tells each other personal stuff.
Scott and Connie, Rosie's parents, were with Lydia at the crime scene, and Gibbs had to calm Scott down, especially after he told Lydia her father would want her to do everything she could to find Rosie. All agents were authorized to join the search, and while they had decent video footage from the theater, they couldn't get a license plate; it was covered or there was none. They were able to put Lydia in contact with her mother, a Navy Commander, but Jennifer was stuck on a ship due to severe weather. She wanted her to stay with Rosie's parents, but Gibbs suggested they had too much on their plate. Ziva offered to let her stay with her.
Ducky found black paint under David's nails; the van had been painted, so it could be any color. Ziva brought Lydia down to Abby so she could swab her clothes and to see if she remembered anything for Abby to do a facial composite. Lydia could just see her father. Going through Rosie's computer, McGee found chats with a John "Diesel" Stevens, who mentioned catching a movie the night before. When Gibbs went to pick him up, he spat on his shoe, so Gibbs punched him. Diesel was a registered sex offender (for urinating on a dumpster next to a school) and claimed he understood that no means no in regards to Rosie. When Gibbs offered to get the dumpsters charges dropped if he told them where Rosie was, he said he wished he knew.
Ziva told Lydia she understood loss. How someone responds is personal, and when Lydia asked if it was hard to get over, Ziva explained, "You never get over. You only get through." After Abby brought over her phone, Lydia told them that people were gathering at the local bowling alley for her father. Gibbs and Ziva went with her, and Jenny and Fred told them everyone loved David and Rosie's parents. When Scott and Connie showed up, Scott wanted to know why there were there instead of looking for Rosie and wouldn't let Fred pull him aside. He insisted Lydia must've seen the kidnappers, and Ziva led her away.
After that experience, Lydia was willing to try anything to remember something, so Abby had her looking through mug shots for face samples. Then Lydia got a text from Rosie from a prepaid burn phone, which they traced to a trailer. They found one of the kidnappers dead and the phone. The guy was Shawn, and he had sent out photos of Rosie in makeup and a dress to other burn phones. They were going to sell her. Gibbs had McGee call Fornell to locate Miranda Pennebaker and had Ziva and Abby take Lydia to his house for the night. Gibbs found Miranda, who was ready to attack until she saw it was him. She owed him, and he was ready to collect. He asked if she was still in sales, and she wanted to know what kind of merchandise he was looking to move. There were some things she wouldn't do, and human trafficking topped that list. However, she did know someone who might know people who were into that, and they went to see Edgar Hayes for his international reach to find out who was in the market for a young girl—and they needed the answers right away. Ducky and Tony called Gibbs to tell him that Shawn's hands and forearms were covered with stuff that suggested mechanic or athlete—bowling.
After a shower, Lydia told Abby and Ziva she remembered the other guy was pudgy and had a beard, and then the lights went out. When Ziva saw the lights on in neighboring houses and on the street, she sent Abby and Lydia upstairs. Fred attacked her in the kitchen, but Abby came to her rescue with a frying pan. In interrogation, he told Gibbs it was just about the money. He didn't mean for it to get out of hand, and he was just the set-up man. A guy he met in prison, Merle, and Shawn asked him about girls and offered him a cut. The buyer was some rich freak, but Fred insisted he didn't know where Rosie was.
Abby found doses of an over-the-counter medication for motion sickness in Shawn, and it became clear once they put that together with what they knew of the buyer, whose name they got from Miranda. He lived off the coast and his helicopter was due to arrive on a farm at dawn. Merle pulled the van up to the helicopter and dragged Rosie out, but NCIS was already waiting. Rosie was reunited with her parents. Back at HQ, Ziva told Lydia the first thing Rosie wanted to know was if she was okay before Abby brought her mother over.
Miranda joined Gibbs in his basement and told him she was considering pulling out of the pond for good and investing in her future. He argued that a zebra couldn't change its stripes, "but a woman can," she replied. And to end the episode, Tony met Shmeil, a much-older man who had known Ziva since she was three—and had met his father in a bar once—and he invited Tony to join them.
