When The X Factor USA returned to FOX on December 5, the top 6 indulged voters with a series of fan-chosen Pepsi Challenge performances. So how did teen phenom Carly Rose Sonenclar fare with her rendition of a popular hit by mega diva Beyonce?

Quite well, as it turned out, though it wasn't her strongest performance to date. She took to the stage with an especially toned down, casual look, and put touches of her own personal soulful style into "If I Were a Boy." She showed a great deal of vocal restraint; in fact, so much so that the performance could've benefitted from a little less of it. But the final product was, of course, still excellent.
LA Reid admitted that as a mentor, she makes him "very, very nervous" but that as a fan "you never let me down." Demi Lovato praised her "phenomenal vocal" but asked her to perform something uptempo in the future. Simon Cowell told Carly Rose to ignore Demi, though he found the lyrics to be "slightly old" for someone in her early teens. Her mentor, pop sensation Britney Spears, called her "the definition" of what the show looks for in a winner.
Carly Rose enters the week's double elimination at the top of the voter leaderboard, but can she hold onto her ranking? Perhaps, but she faces stiff competition from the likes of Tate Stevens, from whom she snagged the top spot a few weeks ago. But one thing's for sure: barring a major vote tabulation snafu, she's not going to find herself headed home tonight.
The December 6 X Factor USA 2012 results show airs at 8 PM PT/ET on FOX, and will feature performances by season one winner Melanie Amaro and Ke$ha.
