With just a week left until the big winner is crowned, The X Factor USA 2012 resumed on December 12 with the semifinal round of action. So did the boys of Emblem3 wow the crowd with their Contestants' Choice round pick, or did their version of a Peter Frampton hit leave the judges cold?
The Huntington Beach, Calif. based trio, comprised of brothers Wesley and Keaton Stromberg and Drew Chadwick, entered the week ranked third behind leaderboard toppers Tate Stevens and Carly Rose Sonenclar. Still reeling from Young Adults mentor Demi Lovato's assertion that they didn't command the stage well, they vowed to make "smart moves". They opted to sing "Baby, I Love Your Way", which the Stromberg boys explained is one of their mom's favorite songs and reminds them if "simpler times". Groups mentor Simon Cowell put his stamp of approval on the pick, and encouraged them to use as much of the stage as they could to appease Demi.
They started their performance lying on the stage looking up at the camera, and abruptly leapt up when the tempo changed to interact directly with the audience. They definitely played the crowd very well, intermittently bee-bopping to the music and handing out high fives to fans. Ironically, though, despite the effort, it still felt like spent an awful lot of time standing still and bouncing their knees.
The judges, however, were very impressed. LA Reid called the performance a "big $5 million moment" and said it was the first time he could see the trio as "stars". Britney Spears called the performance "really special" and said they were "way more than a boy band". Demi, finally happy with the trio, gave them two thumbs up. Simon called it one of the most important nights of their life and agreed with Demi that it reminded him of their initial audition. He finished up his comments with "if this doesn't get you into the final, nothing will".
So will Emblem3 sing for the big prize next week? Find out when The X Factor USA 2012 December 13 results show airs tonight on FOX.
