Supernatural is currently in its eighth season on the CW, and it shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, this season they've managed to find a way to introduce new elements to the mythology, and so it's no surprise that the network has announced an early renewal.
Yes, the series will be back for a ninth season next year, as it continues to do well—and has even performed better in its new Wednesday night time slot, paired with Arrow (which has also been renewed early by the CW for a second season). Is it any surprise that the CW has decided that after the rise in total viewers to secure it for another season early? Yes, things have certainly changed since the first season, but at the heart of it, Supernatural is still about Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) and the family business—though that may have gotten more complicated since the pilot. And with the addition of the Men of Letters this season, they've opened themselves up for even more stories, and with this ninth season pickup, they'll get the chance to tell them.
Are you surprised that news of Supernatural's renewal came so early this year?
