On tonight's episode of The Vampire Diaries, it's revealed that there's only one dose of the cure. Shane has kidnapped Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and plans for Bonnie to open the passageway and free Silas. Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is tortured by a member of The Five named Vaughn. Vaughn wants to use Damon as leverage to get Bonnie to free Silas so that he can kill him. Damon and Vaughn realize that they are not alone on the island as they make their way to the cave. Elena (Nina Dobrev) calls Caroline (Candice Accola) for help.
Since Jeremy is missing they need Klaus (Joseph Morgan)'s sword to lead them to the cure. Things get even more complicated when it's revealed that the map is written in Aramaic, a dead language that only Klaus can translate. Caroline convinces Klaus not only to translate the map, but also to spare Tyler (Michael Trevino)'s life. Klaus asks Caroline if she would ever take the cure. Caroline speaks volumes with her silence. Klaus keeps saying how alike he and Caroline are. And he's right! After the spell that trapped Klaus in Elena's house is broken Tyler knows that Klaus will try to kill him. But Klaus agrees to give Tyler a head start to get out of town. Klaus does this because he knows that Caroline loves Tyler. And Klaus loves Caroline. Klaus and Caroline have great chemistry together, and now that Tyler's gone again maybe it will lead to something stronger.
Elena and Stefan (Paul Wesley) talk about the cure. Elena asks Stefan why he never told her that he wanted the cure for himself. Stefan tells her that his reasons are his own, and have nothing to do with her. This isn't true of course. One of the main reasons Stefan wanted to be human was so that he and Elena could have a life together. But now that he knows that she's in love with Damon, he also knows that this will never happen. Stefan finally tells Elena that they can be friends.
Rebekah (Claire Holt) is jealous when she sees Stefan and Elena together. But she still tells Stefan when she finds out from Klaus that there's only one dose of the cure. Rebekah doubts her brother's motives, until he tells her that he just wants her to be happy and stop hating him. You can't really blame anyone for not trusting Klaus. He's not exactly the most trustworthy person. Klaus is doubted by Stefan and Caroline in this episode too. Rebekah isn't pleased when she finds out that Stefan would still give the cure to Elena. She breaks Stefan's neck before they make it to the cave. But then again Rebekah winds up stuck in the cave with Damon after a fight with Vaughn so that's karma for you.
Bonnie and Jeremy are in the cave together. He asks her what will happen. She promises him that no matter what, she won't let Shane raise Silas. There are a lot of great Bonnie/Jeremy moments in this episode of The Vampire Diaries.
They were good together before she lost control of her magic, and he started seeing ghosts. There were a lot of moments that reminded fans of their history together. When Bonnie starts hallucinating and sees her grandmother Sheila (Jasmine Guy) it's Jeremy who's able to reach her and bring her back. Shane is injured by falling rocks when Bonnie begins to cast the spell.
Bonnie and Jeremy leave him behind. This is one of the smartest decisions that Bonnie's made in a long time. She's finally seeing Shane's true motives. He wants to bring back his family and doesn't care who gets hurt or killed in the process. Stefan also leaves Shane behind when he finds him. Damon gets free from Vaughn and vows to get the cure for Elena. He doesn't know that Elena doesn't think she deserves the cure.
When Stefan finds him injured in the cave, Damon tells his brother to go get the cure for Elena. Stefan finds Elena in the cave. She's also been injured. It turns out that Katherine is the other person with them on the island. When Bonnie and Jeremy finally get to Silas, the cure is stuck in his hands. The only way to get the cure is to raise him.
This is a bad idea. When immortals are scared, you should be too! Bonnie is about to feed her blood to Silas to wake him when Vaughn shows up. Vaughn stabs Bonnie and plans to raise Silas and kill him. Jeremy tries to fight Vaughn, but the fight is interrupted by Katherine. At first Jeremy and Bonnie think it's Elena.
By the time Jeremy realizes the truth, it's too late and he's dead. And Bonnie is gravely injured. Katherine appearance was a welcome and unexpected surprise.
Nina Dobrev's talent is evident in the way she plays too completely opposite characters so brilliantly. Tune in next Thursday at 8pm/7c on The CW as Elena tries to cope with her brother's death.
