American Idol 2013 resumed April 3 on FOX with a slate of classic rock numbers by the top seven. While Massachusetts native and competition frontrunner Angie Miller sailed through her evening and looked right at home in the genre, the night was decidedly tougher on Lazaro Arbos, who once again drew the judges' attention for the wrong reasons.
The decidedly oddcoupling of Angie and Lazaro hit the Idol stage together shortly after Burnell Taylor kicked off the two-hour show to duet for America and judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson. Lazaro provided a weak intro to their rendition of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," but Angie emerged to pick up the slack with a stronger start of her own. Though Angie tried hard to cover for her partner, Lazaro again forgot his lyrics, and the performance felt uneven at best.
Nicki drew snickers from the audience by referring to the two as "Ken and Barbie," and then flatly admonished the Florida ice cream scooper for not knowing the words to the song, telling him he looked "comfortable up until the part you forgot the lyrics again." Randy told Angie she was "amazing as usual" and said Lazaro had improved toward the end. Mariah agreed, saying she especially enjoyed how their voices came together on the very last note. Keith didn't like the song pick, and called the number "variety show-ish". He did, however, appreciate Lazaro's dark jacket and red pants, which he called a departure from his usual "candy man vibe".
Based on the merits of the performance and on their individual numbers --Lazaro sang "We are the Champions" while Angie ended the show with "Bring Me to Life"-- Lazaro could well be in serious trouble during the April 4 elimination show. But will he? Watch the American Idol 2013 top seven results show tonight on FOX to find out.
